Why this matters here more than most
Most websites are chosen by the people who visit them. Ours is not.
Someone who finds a lost water bottle in a car park did not decide to visit ReturnMePlz. They scanned a code on a stranger's belongings, on whatever phone they happen to own, in whatever conditions they happen to be in, and they are trying to do somebody a favour. If the recovery page does not work for them, they will not persevere. They will put the bottle down and walk away, and somebody does not get their things back.
So accessibility is not a compliance box for us. It is the difference between an item coming home and not.
What we aim for
We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA. In practice that means:
- Every form field has a real label, not just placeholder text.
- Focus outlines are visible, so you can see where you are when using a keyboard.
- The whole site works by keyboard alone. Nothing needs a mouse.
- Text can be resized and the page still works.
- Colour contrast meets the standard, and colour is never the only way we tell you something.
- We respect a reduced-motion preference if you have set one.
- Pages carry proper headings and structure, so a screen reader can move through them sensibly.
- Our tables have real headers, so a screen reader can announce which column a value belongs to.
This is an aim, honestly stated, not a claim of certified conformance. ReturnMePlz is a one-person business. We have not commissioned an independent accessibility audit, and we are not going to tell you we have. We build to the standard, we test what we can, and we fix what we find or what you tell us about.
Where we have paid particular attention
- The recovery page, for the reason above. It is deliberately simple: say what you found, write a message, give your email address, and press one button. The email field asks for your address twice, so a simple typo does not stop the owner's reply reaching you. No login, no account, no app.
- The legal pages, including this one. People read a privacy policy because they need to, often on a phone. Long documents are set at a comfortable reading width, tables reflow on small screens rather than being cut off, and nothing important is hidden behind a control you have to find first.
- The cookie banner. It is the first thing a keyboard user meets, so every control in it is reachable and clearly focused, and it never traps you. You can ignore it entirely and still read the whole site.
Known limits
- Our typefaces are served from our own site rather than a third party, so nothing about your visit is sent elsewhere to load them. If a font fails to load for any reason, the page falls back to your system fonts and everything still works.
- Some product photography carries text in the image. We are working through alternative text for these.
- We have not tested with every combination of browser and assistive technology. If yours gives you trouble, we would genuinely like to know.
If something does not work for you
Email info@returnmeplz.com and tell us what happened. It helps if you can say what page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what device or assistive technology you were using, but do not worry if you cannot. Tell us in whatever way is easiest.
We aim to reply within one working day, and to fix accessibility problems as a priority rather than adding them to a queue. If something cannot be fixed quickly, we will tell you honestly and find another way to help you in the meantime. If you would rather telephone, the number is 01202 022205, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
You will never be treated worse for raising an accessibility problem.
Your legal rights
The Equality Act 2010 requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments so that disabled people are not put at a substantial disadvantage. That duty is anticipatory: we are expected to have thought about it in advance, not only once somebody complains. This statement is part of how we do that.
If you are not happy with how we have handled an accessibility issue, our Complaints Policy sets out how to take it further. Free, independent advice is available from Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133.
Keeping this honest
We review this page whenever we make a significant change to the site, and at least once a year. If the description above stops being true, the page gets updated rather than left alone.
